EEG wake-to-sleep transition The artwork portrays the brain’s descent into sleep as a falling trajectory from a wakefulness attractor into a sleep attractor, as symbolized by an hourglass. The falling sand is represented by the brain’s electroencephalogram (EEG) signals of wakefulness and sleep, while the neck of the hourglass represents a kinetic energy barrier. Li et al. used this conceptual framework to demonstrate that the human brain’s transition into sleep shows an abrupt, falling-like bifurcation trajectory, with a momentary tipping point that can be accurately predicted in real time.
